Lawn Bowls Sizes

The bowl travels in a curved path because of the design of the bowl (or ball). In the beginning, weights were literally inserted into the bowl on one side. This is no longer allowed. Now the weight bias is because of the design on the actual bowl.

According to the regulations of the sport, the minimum diameter is 11.6 cm. The maximum is 13.1 cm. As long as these rules are met, the player can choose a bowl that fits their particular tastes.

In the early stages of the sport, they were made from wood (lignum vitae). Today, they are usually made from a hard plastic material.

At one point, the bowls only came in brown or black. In modern times, they are now available in a number of colors, including fluorescent colors.

Each one is identified with unique markings. Many of the bowls look very similar. For that reason, sometimes stickers are put on the bowl to identify them. In fact, some of the local associations will assign specific type of stickers for each team. In national and international competitions, different sets of stickers are assigned based on the country.

As bowls can vary in size from 00 (smallest) to size 7, there will be a particular size of bowl that suits your hand best.

The easy way to measure lawn bowls size is to ensure that the bowl fits nice and snug within the palm of your hand while using your preferred grip. Bowls will also vary in weight, and can be slim or thicker in diameter. It's up to you what feels right in your hand and in your throw action. Many hours of practice will get your familiar with your particular bowls.
